  • This article traces the conditions under which the production model of Toyotism evolved in Japan. By applying methods from the field of economic history, it shows that Toyotism originally emerged from a hybridisation of the Ford system, and is based on a mixture of Japanese innovations, Fordistic or Tayloristic elements and heterodox management theories from the United States. It explains what is meant by kanban, just in time, kaizen etc. and how these management concepts were used by Toyota from the 1950s onwards. It also analyses how, after 1980, the direction of knowledge transfer was reversed. From this moment onwards, it was the Americans who tried to learn from Japan and who adopted concepts in line with the motto ‘lean production’. However, it is still not clear whether this means that Toyotism can be considered to be a new international reference model for production and work organisation.
